NAT KING COLE ROUTE 66 - YouTube
My native language is Slovak, whose orthography is rather phonetic, so I would pronounce Betelgeuse as "Beh-tehl-geh-oo-zeh" (with a hard G as in "golf"). So, I am applying Slovak pronunciation to a Roman transliteration of an Arabic word - what can go wrong? :-)

On a related point, it drives me nuts when I hear military types pronounce the final "e" in cache.
Gary it drives me nuts when Americans refuse to pronounce route correctly. Is it because root is considered a naughty word? How do you pronounce Route 66? I have the radio on in the background and fortunately the announcer used the correct pronounciation of route when discussing road closures due to flooding.
To stay on topic I will ask how the publishers of the Air Mileage Handbook (1953) pronounced Route.
I know of at least two ways to pronounce pronounciation ............ I had better shut up as I am getting way of topic!
