Thanks DaveP. Thanks also to Lars and DavidI and Frank for comments and suggestions. NavList is such a generous site for facilitating helpful and informative sharing a common interest. I made up a truly compact traverse table (TTT) to make life easier (and quicker at the chart table); particularly useful when the off watch leader doesn't like plotting or log keeping. It is 1 page, double sided, covered in adhesive plastic for durability. Course angles every 2.5. Distances every 0.25 miles. Scalable. I can use it for entry with course and distance to find dL and P. From mL and P I find dLong. Or the reverse, by eyeball scanning, I find approx course and distance for given dL and P. Given all the other forces affecting a yacht's track, plus measurement errors, it is approximately right. Better than being precisely wrong.
If the site permits me to include a link to youtube, here is a link to a short film covering some of my sailing last year. Akala is my yacht. Sail number S27. Home club: Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron.
