    Thanks to you and Dave for both suggestions! 

    As for the "reverse procedure", that is used for orbit determination where you get your apparent position from observations (say of a new comet or asteroid or even an NEO that is heading towards Earth!) and you want to plot that onto a star chart or announce to the world your discovery.  I like the idea of using an iterative procedure!

    The old way to do this was with Bessel day numbers which are no longer published in the Astronomical Almanac.
