There have been situations where I had no choice. On some planes that
fly between the Caribbean Islands there simply isn't the physical
possibility to carry a second case, so there is no point arguing with
the air line personnel. I am also embarrassed to say that once I forgot
the sextant on a charter boat and it had to be sent back.

I have done more than half of my offshore sailing on other people's
boats. Delivery captains are normally not too happy when the crew
arrives with several bags of excess luggage. It goes without saying that
they consider sextants as useless ballast, but they are reluctant to
question the legitimacy of your bringing one aboard. They will satisfy
themselves by brushing it off with a sarcastic comment like: "I hope you
know your bowlines as well as the stars!". It helps a lot if the sextant
case is as inconspicuous as possible and can be stored anywhere without
much ado.
