I forgot to say what the printouts where, they are roamers and protractors. a newer addition is the vernier roamer, a great tool for getting accurate (as long as map is accurate) grid references to 3 figures.
also my own version of the "T" plotter with protractor and symedian plotter with 5mm grid added.

    Check here for postscript of
    http://www.outdoorsmagic.com/forum/walking-and-climbing/romer-templates-for-pc/5082.html
Here is the vernier roamer "manual"

#if paper becomes wet it also becomes fragile, transparency printed with laser is #almost impervious to water.
#even laminated paper can decompose if lamination is compromised, laminated #transparency will last several times longer in my experience,
    #
#l have laminated transparencies that have lasted 10 years in leg pocket of my #outdoor clothes, they have seen temps from (and exceeding) +30°C to -20°C, wet #(few unplaned baths, rain...), sand, mud, blood... and still readable, I admit #they are scratched, faded and stained... but still readable.
