Yes I think we were drifting a bit from the 1952 crash. Glad to hear from fellow POB fan!
Yes I find red wine can do the Maturin-Aubrey transformation! Aubrey seemed drunk much of the time, just like most of the Royal Navy, even in battle! Aubrey was a brilliant navigator mostly! And a good amateur astronomer, who ground his own telescope lenses and mirrors to the design of Herschel’s sister and published erudite papers for the Royal Society. Also did good lunars.
The Christopher Urwin chair for Jupiter’s moons was tested by Maskelyne and found to be useless as you could imagine. I think Aubrey trying it out was a bit of a clever joke by O’Brian, who perhaps was also showing off his knowledge of these matters!? Anyways. Great reads all. Maturin was also obviously a premature Darwin!
I re-read the books all the time.
