Doug, thank you very much for mentioning London's chapter on navigation. As you know, his thoughts on learning celestial navigation align very closely with my thoughts and teaching style.
Here's a little group project for everyone. Over the next 24 hours, let's all read this short chapter (16-page PDF attached below) from Jack London's "The Cruise of the Snark". What do we learn about attitudes towards celestial navigation in the first decade of the 20th century? Or is it just London's attitude? And what can we discern about the practice of celestial in this period? And how much of all of this still applies today? I suggest 24 hours to give everyone a chance to read it before we start commenting in detail. You don't have to abide by this suggestion. It's not a rule, by any means, but it may make the conversation more enjoyable if all who are interested have time to read it.
