I am willing to bet that Jack London was trying to mark the exact time of LAN for longitude with a single observation rather than splitting the difference of times of equal altitudes before and after LAN.  Since the Sun hangs for several minutes around LAN then a degree or two of longitude uncertainty would not be surprising. This may account for the unexpected 80 NM  difference in position vs. DR by Log that he describes.
