This is a well researched book about an interesting person - a woman that eventually found a place in an overwhelmingly mysogynic environment. Apart from some success in the instrument trade (one can find her instruments in museums like the Deutsches Museum in München and the NMM Greenwich) and nautical literature (see her books in Frank's 'resource' section) she also invented a 'Mariner's calculator' that was meant to solve problems in nautical astronomy by mechanical means, but was judged by Beaufort to be too delicate for the 'clumsy fingers of seamen'. There still is one example in (unknown) private possession and the Crouchers had a copy made that unfortunately is not complete.

The authors are scientists of standing in Australia: Rosalyn Croucher is emerited professor of law at the Macquarie University in Sydney and President of the Australian Human Rights Commission, John Croucher is professor of statistics at the same university and well known as a former television presenter on football.  They have also published about J.T. in the British Journal for the History of Science and the International Journal of Maritime History. I highly recommend the book.
