Forty years ago tonight, Apollo 8 entered orbit around the Moon. And Borman, Lovell, and Anders became the first people to see the far side of the Moon. Famously, they read a few verses from the Book of Genesis during their broadcast from lunar orbit that Christmas Eve. And on the trip out and back, Jim Lovell became one of the very few astronauts to conduct experiments in actual, autonomous celestial navigation in space. It was all a long, long time ago... Following Borman, I might close this 'broadcast' with "good night, good luck, a Merry Christmas - and God bless all of you, all of you on the good Earth." But since I probably don't have quite the same numbers of listeners as those astronauts did that night, I'll just say Merry Christmas to all the members, lurkers, and occasional readers of NavList! -FER --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ Navigation List archive: www.fer3.com/arc To post, email NavList@fer3.com To , email NavList-@fer3.com -~----------~----~----~----~------~----~------~--~---
