    Jonathan,

You misunderstood  - I said I was of the same vintage as your father. Regardless, the 1942 edition of Dutton was great - still much of the original  material, before the modernization. You will find much material on navigation on the website archive.org, just type "navigation:" into the search field and enjoy for free.  John Letcher's books are great, but you will need muc more for a detailed study.

    Henry,

Thank you for the hearty "Welcome aboard"!  Expect that our father are of the same vintage.  Dutton is the 1942 edition, if I remember correctly.

Fortunately, my father left me a copy of Bowditch from 1962.  Quite a heavy book, both in weight and ease of reading.  Have been able to download a PDF the 2002 edition from the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (http://msi.nga.mil/NGAPortal/MSI.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=msi_portal_page_62&pubCode=0002).  Have been reading other material, using Bowditch as a reference work only.  Currently reading John Letcher's _Self-contained Celestial Navigation with HO 208_ which seems to have a very clear explanations, good diagrams, and helpful practical suggestions.  Was able to get a used copy at a modest price.  A little work with an eraser has done the book a world of good.
