Fortunately, my father left me a copy of Bowditch from 1962. Quite a heavy book, both in weight and ease of reading. Have been able to download a PDF the 2002 edition from the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency [...]. Have been reading other material, using Bowditch as a reference work only. Currently reading John Letcher's _Self-contained Celestial Navigation with HO 208_ which seems to have a very clear explanations, good diagrams, and helpful practical suggestions. Was able to get a used copy at a modest price. A little work with an eraser has done the book a world of good.

You may find Rodger Farley's Celestial Navigation in a Teacup eBook interesting.
