I'm visiting family in Kitty Hawk. Tonight (Friday, Feb. 20) in twilight I saw a beautiful little crescent Moon, like a toenail clipping in the sky as my gran used to say. Some clouds but no problem for a quick sextant sight.
First sight: on the sound side, looking west. My height was about 15 feet. I got a Moon LL sight. 33° 59.0'. Time was 23:25:45 UTC. Inspired by the Moon I got in the car and drove over to the Atlantic side. That's just about 2 nautical miles due east of my Moon sight location. Found parking (not easy on a Friday night).
Second sight: Jupiter 56° 03.0' at 23:41:45 UTC.
Height about 15 feet on this one, too. Maybe 16. Horizon was difficult. I'm not entirely sure how to combine these sights. Suppose I want my fix at the time and location of the Jupiter sight. What would my lat/lon be? And I mean strictly by the celestial navigation and I guess some sort of "dead reckoning". Yes, I've told you where I was more or less, but just from sights please. Where was I? I've got my own numbers, but they're way off. Are the sights okay.
btw, Astra IIIB sextant. No index error.
Thank you for reading,
Tom
