    Jupiter-Venus "distances"

Over the next month or two we have a great opportunity to shoot the angle between Venus and Jupiter in evening twilight every convenient evening. Tonight I tried it with six different sextants within about fifteen minutes. It's great practice from any backyard and requires no artificial horizon. Tomorrow, just preset to 64°, aim at Venus, then roll slowly left until Jupiter slides into view. It's helpful to position yourself so Jupiter is on a branch or a roofline so you know when you're near the right spot. I shot center-to-center angles but there are other options...
