Jerry My bad on the serial number; I misread it as 5017 and never double checked! Sorry. Here is a list of serial numbers of Hughes & Sons sextants, and some other particulars. It would seem yours was made in the winter of 1945-1946. I have entered it in the list. #37290 would seem to be similar to your sextant. Does yours have the type stamped into the arc? Bill Morris' comment that the post-war lattice type frames had vernier adjustments is not in accord with my data. That doesn't mean he's wrong and the inference from my data is correct Fred Hebard mbiew@comcast.net Fields: serial#;type;year certificate issued;date on certificate;comment 4659 vernier 1902 three circle?, March 7243 vernier 1917 Plath type, class B, August 1917 7733 vernier 1916 three circle, December 8935 vernier 1919 three circle, perfect arc August, 1919, no telescopes, vertigris 9906 vernier 1920 January Plath type, but seller says 3-circle! Sadly the sextant came without a calibration certificate.
