Thanks a lot for your remarks!
But you did not use the rope!
What do you think was Kelvin's intended use of the rope?
On the other hand some of your remarks dramatically reduce the calculation part. I mean using a page of almanac and choosing stars whose distance is approximately the difference in declination.
So if you have a mental calculation ability which allows you to get a decent grade in 1873 Tripos,
You probably can do without a pencil (and without charcoal)!
