To those of you with the Kollsman sextant with the electronic averagers. I do understand that the electronic averagers require quite a lot of current - I have a couple of questions.
I currently use a USB battery pack and a DC-DC converter that I have adjusted to spit out 28V - I soldered on an Amphenol connector to the output and I use this to drive the bulbs on my Kollsman with the clockwork averager. It works quite nicely.
When I put this system onto a Kollsman with the electronic averager, it powers on the LED display and the display counts up to 60 when I hit the Start button. Once it reaches 60, a smaller LED at the top flashes and then the system shuts down. It restarts if I pull the power off and then put it back on.
First question - I suspect that the issue here is that my portable power system cannot deliver sufficient current to power the averager and that is causing the averager to shut off after the 2 minute period is complete. For the electronic averager experts, does it sound like a better power supply would do the trick?
Second question - assuming it is a limitation of the power supply and I get the workaround for it, how does one read the post-shot display to adjust the index knob to find the average?
I have found Gary LaPook's excellent post about how to create the requisite power supply!
