Re: Kollsman periscopic sextant mount AFNOA has 5 models of D-1

Hey AFNOA, I am a member and the day I joined (at Randolph AFB) at the Reunion, I won the door prize....a D-1 Sextant. Now if I could only find a mount so that I can set it up at a local museum.  Anyone know where I can buy one?  Jim Bradley, Nav/EWO, USAF Retired

Hi Jim.  I hope every time you open the box you get that lovely whiskey/rubber/kerosene sort of smell.  Just keep looking on eBay.  Mountings come up about a fifth as often as sextants and cost about twice as much as a sextant.  Expect to see them from $100-$300 ‘Buy it Now’.  Offer about half what they’re asking and be prepared to walk away and wait until next time.  Look very carefully at any photos.  Some mountings are bashed because they were ‘tin openered’ out of scrapped aircraft.  It’s worth waiting for what used to be called a ‘new and unissued’ one, i.e one held in reserve for a force that went out of Service.  The RAF scrapped all their Nimrods, so someone probably sold all their spare mountings for pennies as well.  I suspect that’s where mine came from.  I waited about two years to get a near perfect mounting and walked away from a bashed one.  I expect your D1 is 24V.  If you buy a mounting from Europe don’t be surprised if the illumination output is 3V to match the European Kollsman sextants, not that this really matters.  Hope this helps.  DaveP
