I used to determine position at sea on a Navy ship in the Pacific, using the standard of the time, the Nautical Almanac and HO 229.  What I found interesting doing these observations from a known position on land is how much we've been spoiled by GPS.   If I got a fix with a couple of miles of uncertainly in the middle of the ocean, it hardly shows up on a plotting sheet.  Drawing a fix on shore and it looks like huge errors!   Wonder what others' experience of accuracy of fixes is normally, or what is considered an "excellent" fix in terms of degree of confidence in location.
