Bob Crawley, thanks for your kind remarks.

Frank Reed you asked will it go on You Tube?  Yes ‘They gona put me in the Movies’.  Once it’s up, if it’s not too embarrassing, I’ll post the link.  I was surprised how many people watched the webinar.  Over 70 registered, 64 began watching, and 60 stuck with it until the end (if only out of curiosity as to which mistake I’d make next!).  All these webinars are marketed as business tools, so they can tell you all the stats.  Apparently, my ratios were satisfactory.  That’s the power of the www for you.  I’m lucky if I get 20 attending my face to face meetings.

You asked how was it for me?  The three main problems for me during the preparation were getting permission to use borrowed photos and diagrams etc.  If you’re giving a lecture in the back room of a pub to a few mates, it doesn’t really matter if you pinch a whole load of photos off Google without asking.  If there’s a chance you might end up on the www, you can’t take that risk.  In general, private and small business people couldn’t have been more helpful.  The big publishers were hopeless and just kept replying with computer generated questionnaires which didn’t really answer the question.  In the end I gave up and redrew several diagrams in PowerPoint Draw myself.  The next problem was going off on a tangent with a Google chase every time I got to a bit I wasn’t certain of.  The last problem was that, in the end, I’d included far too much material, and practices were taking about 90 minutes.  I thought I’d got round this by leaving a lot out and seeding questions from my mates, so I could talk about it in the question session.

It didn’t quite work out that way.  During the event Clare, the presenter, got so many questions from people I didn’t know, that she never got round to asking the questions I’d seeded to be asked by people I do know.  Fortunately, all that going off on a tangent with Google, meant I was able to make a reasonable job of answering the questions I wasn’t expecting. What is NavList?

NavList is a community devoted to the preservation and practice of celestial navigation and other methods of traditional position-finding. We're a group of navigators, navigation enthusiasts and hobbyists, mathematicians and physicists, and historians interested in all aspects of navigation but primarily those techniques which are non-electronic.

To post a message, if you are already signed up as a NavList member, start a new discussion or reply to any posted message and use your posting code (this is a simple low-security password assigned when you join). You may also join by posting. Your first on-topic messsage automatically makes you a member, and a posting code will be assigned and emailed to you for future posts.

Uniquely, the NavList message boards also permit full interaction entirely by email. You can optionally receive individual posts or daily digests by email, and any member can post messages by email (bypassing the web site) by sending to our posting address which is "NavList@NavList.net". This functionality is similar to a traditional Internet mailing list: post by email, read by email, reply by email. Most members will prefer the web interface here for posting and replying to messages.

NavList is more than an online community... more about that another day.
