If you were wondering where I dreamt up Lat = 180-(Dec+ZD) from when the star and the observer are on opposite sides of the elevated Pole, please see the photograph below, which comes from Mary Blewitt’s ‘CELESTIAL navigation for yachtsmen’ 12th EDITION 1977 p23. As you will see from others’ more complete results, close to meridian passage you’re safe with latitude, as seamen have known using latitude sticks and the likes for over 1,000 years. Using a single max or min altitude estimate to obtain longitude requires a lot of luck, even with an accurate chronometer. DaveP
