Thanks Gary, Geoff, Dave (twice!), Lars, Andy. Lots of interesting ways of looking at it. And of course, Frank, that wasn't just educational navigation --that was a nice, readable story. I GET IT now! Your Latitude=PD+Altitude seems OBVIOUS now. And it really wasn't obvious to me before, so it seems obvious now because you DID THAT. This is why I come here. NavList has so many talented navigators.
Can I do this in the southern hemisphere? If I sail around Cape Horn or near New Zealand, is there a good star or stars for latitude near the south sky pole? I know there's not really a southern pole star. Is there a "southern Kochab"?
