    I have also seen this. For example, my own first try
    (posted on the old list 2 years ago).

    Do you know BEFORE the reduction and comparison
    with your true position that your hand shaked or
    eyes watered? Or you come to this conclusion AFTER
    you discover a 1' error?

    I posted once (on the old list) statistics of
    many Russian observations from a ship
    (including Sun and star altitudes and star distances),
    all observations made by professionals,
    under various conditions, presumably with Russian sextants.
    (I can post this again, on the new list).
    
    My own observations are somewhat less accurate than those,
    especially in star distances, where I have more data.
