David, I buy your logic. That's how I did it, too.
It's a BELOW THE POLE latitude so we use Lat = PD + Ho. And thanks to Tom for that reminder. The trick is deciding where true N is in the photo. That should happen when two stars on the same RA are aligned vertically. Then either one can give the declination and altitude. I did that.
I measured pixels near the center of the image for known stars and then compared with angle sep to get pixels per degree. Measuring it out, I get Ho= 21.82 degrees and PD= 38.41 deg so Latitude is 60.23 degrees. I can see that on a map, but I don't know Scotland and islands up there. Since you're the British local, can you tell is that latitude makes sense??
