One might even call it a rite of passage for a voyager in arctic regions. I will suggest that they took these sights both of necessity and for the pleasure of that unique opportunity. One quick note: the easy rule, Lat = ZD + Dec, does not apply for these "meridian passage below the pole" sights. There is a simple rule anyway, and you can work it out, I am sure.
