Bowditch is more a reference book than a teaching guide. Very useful for the
experienced person to refresh their memory, or clarify particular points.
While I learnt most of my nav from Bowditch, I came to it with extensive
relevant skills and mathematical training. I now know there are much better
books around for the beginner. I like Dutton's Navigation and Piloting: it
is written for the student and intended to be used in conjunction with
Bowditch, crossreferencing to it extensively. I believe Dutton's and
Bowditch were the texts of choice in many navigation classes in years gone
    by.

Other people on the list have other favourites. If you search the archives
of the old list, there was an exchange some years back where people on the
    list nominated their favourites.

The 2002 edition of Bowditch you have is heavily influenced by modern
navigation techniques. I believe the editions from the 1960s through the
1980s are the best from the tradional navigation perspective. Similarily, I
favour older editions of Dutton's, particularily the 13th and 14th editions.

While not exactly free, all of these books can be bought very cheaply on
Ebay, $10USD or less, a volume. You might have to watch for a few weeks to
    pick them up.
