I learned Cel Nav from books, long before I saw a real sextant for the first time.
Good books are abundant, and many of them can be obtained for free.

The crucial question (if you want to learn practical side of it) is how far you are from a sea.
Sea horizon is necessary for normal CN observations.
If you are far from it, traveling to a seashore can be more expensive than purchasing a sextant.

If you are close to a seashore, just read some small, introductory book,
take some sites and reduce them. Then read more.
If you are far, you will have to practice much more complicated tings:
artificial horizon or lunar distance observations.

    Alex.

In your opinion, what is the quickest, easiest and least expensive way to
learn celestial navigation. I just purchased a Davis Mark 3 and would like
to learn the basics as a backup for electronic marine navigation.

    Thanks....
