Bob,
I think when someone is learing cel-nav that an artifical horizon is not the way to go. I live in Nebraska, far from any ocean so I practice using a line I drew on my barn. Several years ago a fella from Australia ( I think ) used the top of a fence. Now I know that it is not as accurate as the true sea or AH but for practice it is OK. Over the years I have learned to add 2.3' to my shot.
When learing, stick with the sun - after a while you can use your new skills for stars, etc. but using a Davis Mark 3 with no scope - only a empty tube - stars are hard to see.
