Every historian of navigation and every modern fan of celestial navigation should read, and probably re-read, Squire Lecky's "Wrinkles in Practical Navigation". Even though it's over a hundred years old, much of the practical advice still seems fresh. And now it's online. You can read it through google books. Go to: http://books.google.com/ and enter intitle:"wrinkles in practical navigation" in the search box. The edition from 1884 should be the only result from this search.
