    Vielen Dank Kermit!

I was convinced I was simply overlooking something. (But even Ken Adler couldn't remember what he was doing in his wonderful little book.)

Did they compute ground ("sea level") distances from mountain peak altitudes (obtained from "sextant" measurements) using simple geometry (or even spherical trig)? I wish I could find a good comprehensive historical account of the techniques employed.

    Thanks.
