Thanks to Ken Muldrew for reminding us that many of us thought hard about this problem, some years ago now. I would say that the upshot of it was that it reamained just as much of a mystery, what Lewis and Clark were measuring (or thought they were measuring), as it was when we started. I presented it as a problem in the days when I was starting to put together that Lewis and Clark website, long before that website actually appeared, so it's presented in slightly different terms, and without any sort of plot. Even so, I think the basic information, presented then, was the same as is in the website now. It will be good to see if Antoine can get anywhere, with a fresh pair of eyes. In case it's useful, my original request (and a bit of a challenge) was presented in this posting- http://www.fer3.com/arc/m2.aspx?y=200404&i=015104 If Antoine feels like following that up, he will find rather a lot of responses, and much deep thought, but (as I recall) no convincing explanation that fits all the facts.
