George, you may have taken what I wrote about Steven
Ambrose incorrectly.
Steven Ambrose was an American historian who wrote
many books on a veriety of historical subjects. The ones you,in England, will most
likely have heard of are "June 6th,1944.D-Day" , "Band of Brothers" or "Citizen
Soldiers".He wrote a book about the Lewis and Clarck Expedition.I can't remember
the name but someone on list may.It was a very well written and researched
book. That is all I know about the 1803 expedition.
The rest of the post I wrote was of my
understanding of life in the area of south east Pennsylvania when I was growing
up.The era from 1848 thru 1911 just fascinates me.I've read histories of
people, events, economics etc. throughout this time frame.I don't know enough of
the history of the 1803 time frame to really comment on how it was or what
watches were used etc.But if it was as I've stated in the 1848-1865 time frame
that might give you a base line to understand or judge what it was
like even earlier as to life, conditions and technology.
