    I think it all boils down to the different rate of change for a geocentric observer (seeing the true distance) as compared to a topocentric observer (seeing the apparent distance). In enclosed file I have plotted the true distance between 3h and 4h UT as well as the apparent distance (for a stationary observer). The latter actually increases before 3.1h UT and then gradually starts to decrease, while the true distance has an almost linear decrease during the time interval shown. I have to admit that I have difficulties grasping the concept of a moving observer in this case.
