    I agree!  The proximity of the other instruments is what drove my response.  It should contain something related to navigation.  Yet I do not think it contains a theodolite, as they were stored in wooden boxes.  A book would not have a special case, just like a slate would not have one.  I'm just a little surprised the octant is stored the way it is.  We've all seen the special boxes.

    The case just looks like an ordinary ditty bag to me.  What the modern day metropolitan would call a gym bag.
