Re: Lightning Strike Damage To Navigation Equipment

    Tom,

Hope this is still "on topic?"

I'm  no physicist, but suggest something on the following lines.

    1) first define main experimental variable. Is it EMP pulse, ligtning strike or what?

    2) If EMP pulse, what does the "natural EMP " profile look like (ie close to a lightning strike) State the objective of the study.e.g "does the Faraday cage protect against EMP pulse damage?"

    3) does the MRI machine reproduce a profile like that? i.e is it a valid "surrogate" of the natural phenomenum?

    4) If yes, then suggest test 2 cheap metal mechanical watches, 3 or 4 cheap quartz watches (both metal cased and plastic). Rate their "going" for a couple of weeks.

    5) Put half test watches in Faraday cages,  the rest "naked". Tie them down (Medical MRI scanners have been known to throw metal objects about!)

    6) Do the simulated EMP test.

    7) inspect for damage, and test "going"for 2 weeks. Answer the question, "does the Faraday cage protect against EMP pulse?"

If we can afford it, could do similar with other things like smart phones, GPS,  metal sextant (not donating mine!) etc

I seem to remember, in the dark ages, my high school physics, we built a small Van de Graaf generator  that produced wonderful lightning type sparks. Would this do it?

On another (definitely off topic) subject. liked your book and have sent you private email, MD to MD.

    Best wishes

    Francis
