Back in February I mentioned "Notes on Determination of Position Near the Pole" by Arthur R. Hinks in the March 1910 journal of the Royal Geographical Society. Included are some remarks by Scott. He favored a 3-inch theodolite. (That's the diameter of the graduated circle.) https://archive.org/details/in.ernet.dli.2015.463878/page/n384/mode/1up?view=theater The table of contents is at the end of the volume: https://archive.org/details/in.ernet.dli.2015.463878/page/n994/mode/1up?view=theater The page numbers there don't match the numbers in the online reader due to the maps. Some trial and error is necessary to find an article. One is by Major P. H. Fawcett, who I assume is the same man who famously disappeared in the 1920s while seeking a legendary lost city. https://archive.org/details/in.ernet.dli.2015.463878/page/n217/mode/1up -- Paul Hirose sofajpl.com
