Although not related to lunars or even that much to celestial navigation, "Log of a Limejuicer" may be of interest to members of NavList if they have not come across it. It is by Captain James Platt Barker about his life at sea and as master of one of the last operating fully rigged ships, British Isles. It can be downloaded here: https://archive.org/details/logofalimejuicer006327mbp Barker does mention learning lunars at nav school but never mentions using them in practice.
If you read this one, you almost have to read "The Cape Horn Breed" by Jones. Jones based his book on his father's account of his expereince at sea and in particular, his time as a brass bounder aboard the British Isles under Barker. A particularily consistent account of a terribly brutal passage around the horn in 1904 is covered in both books.
