Bob Otnes, math historian extraordinaire, left me with this puzzle after I asked him about how the transcendentals were first calculated. Cryptically, he looked at me with a twinkle in his eyes and said, simply, "36". I admit I haven't done my homework to understand what he meant. Anybody on the board have an idea? I said, 'Well, it's a tenth of 360. He hinted that I might be on the right track.
