My aim was to determine position by what I regard as the "traditional" method - long by chron and a noon sight. I have used both Sumner methods. I prefer the original which is the one you describe as I find it easier to plot.
Live about 120km [1] south of Palmerston North. Have you heard of John Cleese (of Monty Python fame)? Many years ago he visited Palmerston North and made some comments about how boring the place was. It has become a running joke in NZ. Mention Cleese and you think of Palmerston North. Mention Palmerston North and you think of Cleese.
It will be dead reckoning today as outside there is low cloud and mist.
