Greg, I have read that during WWII in the Pacific, submarine navigators were able to get star sights on moonless nights, once their eyes were fully dark-adapted, using 7X50 scopes.

Bill Morris might know of this?

In the appendix of Bernard Moitessier's book THE LONG WAY he describes briefly his CN methods. Not sure about his discussions on refraction. Perhaps something got lost in translation. I did find his technique of making observations without a scope and both eyes open interesting. Being able to take a round of stars on a moonless night is something that would have to be confirm.
