    Your response gives me a good place to start although it will probably take me a while to work through this. I could no doubt find stars from other than the Nautical Almanac to use which would help. To simplify things for a first attempt I might just estimate the passage of the center of the moon (the telescope on my Wild T2 is 28 power) and I think I could get pretty close to a passage time for the center of the moon, certainly within a few seconds or so. 

    Thank you very much for taking the time help me with this. Now, as usual, I just need the moon to be visible at an appropropriate time. It does make me appreciate some of the trials the early mappers dealt with before good UTC was available in remote areas on land.
