Frank, this is the consequency of "war of mathematicians" mixed with chauvinism !
"haversine formula" = "Borda formula" : but the formula is the same (but it is true that in french logarithmes tables, you dont find a table giving the nat or log of function "versine" ou "haversine").
"cosine formula" = "fundamental formula" in France.
But I agree with you : for clearing lunar distance, the method of Borda is complicated.
Another complicated formula from Borda is for the calculation of altitude (see the book of Borda about the circle of reflexion).
