Frank, the earliest experiments on this were actually in Salem, Mass in the late
1600's. The town fathers lined up six alledged witches and had three of them
peer into the sun using "spy glasses" of an undetermined nature, while three
others simply stared up at the sun.
All six burst into flames, and it was concluded that the risk of using spy
glasses to observe the sun was nothing extra.
It's hard to knock such old and scientific experiments.
