A current Nautical Almanac and H.O. 229 (for your latitude) could be almost as easy and more "genuine."
I found a nice 1929 C. Plath in an antique shop in St. Michael's a few years ago (which I've reconditioned). A few years earlier I bought a Celestaire 3b. And more recently a new C. Plath Horizon to which I've just added their Casio watch... mounted to the sextant frame, making it a bit easier to grab the exact time of your sight. And even more recently a Freiberger (alas, with only a handmade vernier). From my back deck I've confirmed where I live to within a few hundred feet ;-).
C. Plath also sells a not inexpensive artificial horizon (today about $400 more than when I first bought mine).
Why do we do these things?
Dale
