I would like to echo Frank’s assessment of the capabilities of the modern smart phone. I own a nine-year-old refurbished cell phone that I purchased five years ago for a fraction of what it sold for new, expressly for the purpose of doing all things that Frank enumerated. There is no SIM in the phone, and I do not have a cellular telephone service contract. In an emergency, I can still make an 911 call. And I have one of those apps that allows me to send and receive text messages, and make telephone calls, whenever I have a wifi connection.
