Doing a bit of research on LORAN A, I stumbled onto the following site:

Very interesting, but some of the names struck my peculiar sense of humor.
In 1937 R. J. Dippy worked for Watson-Watt's, who developed radar in 1935. Dippy invented a system that sent out pulses to assist an aircraft in finding the runway-approach sweet spot. This was the Gee system. (The "Gee Spot"?)

In mid-1942 Dippy "was sent to the USA for eight months to assist in Loran development." Which was the beginning of LORAN as we know it.
