    A few personal anecdotes...

We live on the border of a few thousand acres of public State of
Wisconsin Land. We routinely get people coming to our door who have
managed to get themselves lost. I've noticed this is more apt to happen
on cloudy days when people don't have the Sun as a reference. Last year
during the annual deer hunt, we had a guy come to the door a bit after
dark. He had no idea where is was nor did he really know here he had
parked his car. There are four parking lots around the border of the
area.. After having him describe where he parked, I was able to figure
out where his car was and drove him there.

Some years ago we did a canoe trip in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.
This is huge area located in Northern Minnesota. There is an even
larger adjoining area in Canada called the Quetico. Anyway we had gone
about 15 miles into the area by canoe camping along the way. We decided
to take a hike on one of the hiking trails. My group stopped for lunch
but I walked ahead a bit and came upon a area full of blue berries. I
was so intent on picking the berries, I lost track of where the trial
was. After a bit of aimless exploring, I decided I had better either
stand still until the rest of my party got worried enough to come
looking for me or at least not make my situation worse. I could have
easily wandered off and been hopelessly lost. Anyway, I put my coat as
high in a tree as I could as a kind of benchmark. I then explored the
area keeping within sight of my coat until I happened on the trail. I
retrieved my coat and returned to my lunch.
