That people without a sense of orientation describe circles seems well-established, and as the researchers point out, the circles can be surprisingly small (circa 20-metres). But the reasons as suggested just appear to be speculation. Nobody seems to really know why.

They suggest that the subjective sense of "straight ahead" gets distorted, and isn't the product of one leg being longer than the other (which has sometimes been suggested).
