Just conceptually, the moon moves at a different rate than the stars so the spacing changes. Lunar distances is designed to discover the accurate time. So, caluclate a three star fix and then draw in the concurrent moon LOP. If your time is accurate then the moon line should go through the star fix. If it doesn't then the difference between the longitude of the star fix and the longitude of the moon line at the latitude of the star fix shows the error in the time of all the observations.
