Thanks for your response. The problem you mention has been already identified and it was fixed on 12th September.
Please look at the Skyfield changelog for version 1.44 (last item):

The change in the URL was confirmed to be by Gillles Landais from the University Strasbourg.
All you have to do is to update Skyfield to the latest version:
>pip install skyfield --upgrade
(note the double dashes)
Your workaround also works, of course.
